best practices to creating team synergy

7/5/2015

I’ve had amazing opportunities to work with some world-class teams and some not so world-class teams…

The teams that are world-class have this ineffable synergy to them. The difference between those that had amazing team synergy and those that didn’t is leadership.

If you’ve been struggling to motivate your team or inspire them to give more, serve more, lead more, then you will love this week’s episode.
At the core, imagine every single person on your team has an invisible sign that reads, “Make me feel important.”

When you acknowledge your team, this will equate to more profits, productivity and commitment not only individually, but also collectively.

So here are three powerful tools to take your team to the next level:

1. Empower Your Team
People take pride in their work when they have the responsibilities and authority to do their best work. They feel more engaged and support that which they help create. That’s why your team can be an invaluable resource of ideas and have the authority to run and manage it.

The biggest mistake entrepreneurs and managers make is wearing the technical or operation hat rather than the entrepreneurial hat of further growing, developing and expanding the business. Micro managing and trying to control all the operations no only undermines the team, but certainly doesn’t necessarily use the best use of YOU.

Create opportunities for growth and advancement. Ensure that your team realizes that as their value to the company increases, the company itself grows because without growth, opportunities for advancement are limited.

Give rewards and incentives for team members stepping up. This isn’t just limited to monetary gains. Praise your team and give recognition as much as possible. Recognition increases pride and boosts team morale.

2. Develop “A” Players
Build your team from within; develop your people from within.  Giving the proper training not only on the business and products, but also leadership and personal development. Little successes lead to larger successes. You are only as strong as your weakest link. Invest in your people because the speed of the leader is the speed of the gang.

If you want to encourage your team to strive for excellence in all facets of business – lead by example. Are you working your business as passionately as you could? Remember, enthusiasm moves mountains; likewise hesitation and self-doubt are just contagious.

Be a person of your word. Showing almost always works better than telling so if your knowledge, expertise, experience, personal credibility, sense of self-respect and sound work habits don’t represent excellence, than neither will your teams.

3. Provide Mentorship
Explicitly communicate and allow an open door policy. Encourage and invite feedback. This will establish trust and diminish the divide that crushes team synergy. The more you know about your teams biggest frustrations, challenges and struggles, the better you will be able to meet them where they are.

When was the last time you asked your team what their dreams and aspirations are? Your willingness to demonstrate a thorough understanding of your teams’ needs and invest in their success, the better able you’ll be to raise them to a higher level.

The more open, honest and clear communication you have with your team, the better you are able to see blind spots and help fill in those gaps. Ultimately, your team needs to feel your support and that you will stick out your neck for them. If you have that right, your team will show up for you more than you can ever imagine.
