Whenever I find a goodie I just can’t help but share it! This topic has grown in research and studies in Psychology, this is believed to be one of the most important factors that is within our control for future success in not only in business, but also in life and our happiness…pretty huge!
This single most important factor is Emotional Intelligence because unlike its counterpart IQ, no amount of new information can increase your IQ.
However, because we’re hard wired to experience emotions before we can respond to them your emotional intelligence or EQ, you can develop and strengthen with discipline and action.
Those who have a high EQ, who know and manage their own feelings well and who read and deal effectively with other people’s feelings have more success in all areas in life.
This means YOU being a more influential leader. Whether it’s managing stress and emotions under pressure situations, staying motivated and focused, leading and influencing your team, growing and developing relationships are all fundamentals to success in our business.
According to Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves in Emotional Intelligence 2.0, they break up EQ into four components. The first two are personal competence and the last two are social competence.
Self-Awareness – ability to make sense of your emotions. Emotions always serve a purpose. By spending time thinking through your emotions to figure out where they come from and what purpose they serve, you are far more likely to pursue the right opportunities.
What is your willingness to tolerate the discomfort in your business?
Do you understand which people and situations push your buttons??
Do you have a high understanding of what you do well? What motivates you? What satisfies you?
Self-Management – ability to stay flexible and direct your reactions positively. These include keeping your cool in tough situations when things don’t work out or fall apart and also and your ability to tolerate uncertainty while exploring your options in your business.
How well do you manage your emotional reactions?
How well do you control your emotions or do your emotions control you?
What do you need to start doing and stop doing in order to effectively read and react to situations?
How willing are you to put momentary needs on hold to pursue larger, more important goals?
Social Awareness – ability to accurately pick up on the emotions of other people in order to understand what is really going on with them. Listening and observing are the most crucial elements.
How well are you able to pick up on other people’s emotions whether they are your clients, team members or even friends and family?
How well do you listen and observe without having your own agenda?
Relationship Management - ability to use your awareness of your own emotions and those of others to building relationships long-term. Making relationship work takes time and effort using clear communication and conflict resolution. You want to make sure people feel like you have their back and they have yours.
How well do you build solid relationships both in your business as well as personal life?
How much time do you contribute to strengthening and deepening the quality of your relationships?
How often do you initiate a direct and constructive conversation in order to resolve a conflict?
I always say life is ALL about relationships, both in business and life. In my business the most important thing for me is to come from a genuine and authentic place of service. In my personal life, whoever I interact with, I want them to feel uplifted and brighten their day.
As you go through this process, be honest with yourself but also be kind and compassionate. No judgment. No criticism. This is about MASTERY. There are hundreds of ways to succeed, and many different abilities that will help you get there. The most important is that you know what those are for YOU!
