You spend so much time being disciplined by being focused, productive “adults.” But do you discipline yourself to nurture and develop your inner creator and artist within?

You see, growing up I danced ballet and played the violin for 10 years. I drew, I played and spent time being creative simply because I enjoyed those activities. Whenever I danced, the world melted away and my heart and soul felt as if it was soaring.

As I transitioned into adulthood, I gave much of that up because I thought that’s what part of “growing up” meant and because I had less and less time for it. So I thought…

But the more I gave up my creative and artistic side, the more life seemed to be bleak and bland. The spark seemed like a distant past time.

Have you ever felt that way, have given up your creative pursuits or made less time for them? Whether you feel blocked, stuck or simply want to amplify your spark, watch this week’s video.

In The Artist’s Way, Julia Cameron mentions two exercises that help blocked creators become unblocked.

Morning Pages:
You simply write free handed for 3 pages every single morning. Tapping into your creativity and inner artist will show you things you never could have seen otherwise. The left-brain censors your thoughts, actions and restricts you from seeing things from a different perspective.

The more freedom you give yourself to free write, the easier it will be to silence the censor part of your left-brain and tap into a higher wisdom that goes beyond thinking. This higher thinking has the solutions to all your problems. This higher thinking is the source of joy, love, compassion, and acceptance and opens the world to you. It is seeing through the eyes of the heart. It is the unblocking and aligning with flow.

The Artist Date:
Solitary time with you and your inner artist to do whatever activity your heart decides. There is no right or wrong way to do this. Simply trust your instincts. Read fiction books, go bowling, take a drive in the mountains, draw, dance, paint, sculpt, learn to play an instrument, try something new or pick up something you have given up, whatever speaks to you. Make sure to pencil a weekly date in your calendar because as we both know, unless it’s scheduled…it won’t happen. Don’t let the censor left-brain talk you out it either! ;)

Now, you might be asking,"How did this relate to your business and purpose?"

Dan Sullivan talks about The Gap – your ideals vs. your reality. When you compare your ideals to your reality, the gap between the two can create much unnecessary pain and suffering. By a simple reframe, you can release your suffering.

It’s the difference between happiness and fulfillment. Happiness is a state of happy, which is an emotion and emotions are all temporary. That car, house, money will only bring you temporary joy and satisfaction in your life.

Fulfillment on the other hand is progress, growth, development and learning. You detach from any specific thing, need or desire to make you happy. The more you release the more freedom and joy you will experience with the present moment here and now.

Use this to create a higher quality of life for yourself. Ask yourself:

How can the world look better 20 years from now? What is your secret vision?

How can you begin to create and contribute to that vision today?

All you have to do is continue to think and imagine it and the path will become clear.

Most important is to have fun with this.

“Why should we all use our creative power…? Because there is nothing that makes people so generous, joyful, lively, bold and compassionate, so indifferent to fighting and the accumulation of objects and money.” – Brenda Ueland
